Cognitive Science Program Forms
Cognitive Science Major Requirements Form
1. Please submit the form in the first semester of your senior year so that we can check that you're on track to complete the major requirements.
2. Please submit the form a SECOND TIME in the second semester of your senior year, after your registration is finalized. You may have taken multiple courses which could count towards the same requirement and we’ll need to know exactly which course you want to count for which requirement when we certify you for graduation. Please note that the courses that you list on the form to count towards your major are the courses we will include when we calculate your major GPA (which is taken into consideration for recommendations on Departmental Honors).

Cognitive Science Specialization and Electives Approval Form
Your Cognitive Science area of specialization and choice of electives must be approved by the program director. The program director will consult with a faculty member who has expertise in your area of specialization before approving your specialization and electives. (Unfortunately, if there is no faculty member at Barnard or Columbia who has expertise in your chosen area, then you must choose another area.)
Please keep in mind that many advanced courses have prerequisites. If you’re considering a course as a possible elective you should check whether it has prerequisites and take that into account as you plan your courses.

Cognitive Science Transfer and Study Abroad Credit Approval Form
After you have completed this form, your response will be emailed to you. Please forward that email to Maia Bernstein at mbernste@barnard.edu; please attach a PDF of the syllabus for the course to the email.
We'll have decisions on requests submitted by the first of each month by the first of the following month (so, for instance, if you submit the form and the syllabus by October 1, we'll have a decision for you by November 1). Please note that your submission is not complete until we have received the syllabus.
Please only use this form for courses which you wish to count for the five area requirements (psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, linguistics, and mathematical and computational methods). If you wish to count a course from another institution as an elective, then please include it among your other electives on the Cognitive Science Specialization and Electives Approval Form and attach the syllabus as a PDF when you email that form to the program director.
Please note that the course must have already been approved by your school (BC, CC, or GS) to count towards your degree requirements before it can be considered for your Cognitive Science major requirements.
Please note that a maximum of four transfer courses may be counted towards the Cognitive Science major.
